About Lolita:  The most controversial classic novel of the 20th century, Lolita tells the story of Humbert Humbert, a middle-aged man who is aroused to erotic desire only by a young girl.
About Nabokov: Vladimir Nabokov was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1899. After studying French and Russian literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, he launched his literary career in Berlin and Paris. In 1940 he moved to the United States, here he achieved renown as a novelist, poet, critic, and translator. Lolita," " arguably his most famous novel, was first published, by the Olympia Press, Paris, on September 15, 1955, and became a controversial success. "It's really a very simple story. What happened was this: I met this girl and did a very stupid thing. I fell in love. Hard. I know that to some people that makes me an idiot and a loser. What can I say? They're right. I did some extremely foolish things; I'm the first to say it. And they've left me in jail and alone."
So begins one of the most compelling, emotionally charged, and affecting novels you are likely to read this year.  It is the summer of 1968 and a young man takes a job at a camp in upstate New York before starting his first semester at Columbia University. There, he meets Rachel Price, a fellow counselor who is as beautiful as she is haunted. Their romance will burn with a passion neither of them has ever known before...a passion with the power to destroy.   In the tradition of Endless Love and Gone Girl, What it was Like is an intimate, raw, and revealing journey through the landscape of all-consuming love. It announces the debut of a remarkable storyteller.  (Story Plant)

Sep 9 2014 - 7:00pm

Combining the eloquence and raw sensuality of Jeanette Winterson with the romantic, renegade spirit of Patti Smith, Further Out Than You Thought is a taut and erotically charged literary debut, set against the chaos of the 1992 L.A. riots, about three people searching for identity and meaning from award-winning poet and indie bookshop co-founder Michaela Carter.

In the Neverland that is Los Angeles, where make-believe seems real, three dreamers find themselves on the verge of transformation. Twenty-five-year-old poet Gwendolyn Griffin works as a stripper to put herself through graduate school. Her perpetually stoned boyfriend Leo dresses in period costume to hawk his music downtown, and seems to be losing his already tenuous grip on reality. And their flamboyant best friend and neighbor, nightclub crooner Count Valiant, is slowly withering away.

When the city explodes in violence after the Rodney King verdict, the chaos becomes a catalyst for change. Valiant is invigorated, Leo plans a new stunt--walking into east L.A., naked, holding a white flag--and Gwen, discovering she is pregnant, is confronted by troubling questions. Can Leo become a good, dependable father? Can she leave the club life behind, or will the city's spell prove too seductive?

Combining poetry and sensuality with an edgy urban sensibility, Further Out Than You Thought is a celebration of life and a haunting story of love, friendship, and one woman's quest for redemption. (William Morrow & Co)

I will fly at last. I will unfold my wings. I will unpack my head. I will step back outside. One day I may even make love again. But one thing at a time. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Film mogul, aviator, addict, inventor, visionary, recluse, serial womanizer, and political meddler: Howard Hughes was one of the strangest and most significant figures of the 20th century. His obsessive-compulsive disorder would end up crippling and isolating him; in the end he self-medicated his way into oblivion. It's a summer night in 1973, and holed up in his hotel penthouse in London, Hughes can't sleep. Tomorrow he takes control of an airplane for the first time in more than 15 years. As the reclusive, drug-addled billionaire waits for dawn, the shape and preoccupations of the times emerge from his ruined psyche; a world of oil, flight, money, movies, drugs, sex, power, greed, fear, yearning America. Transcendent and debauched, God of Speed is a fever dream, a giant and extraordinary leap of the imagination into the fractured mind of a man who was both great and greatly fallen. (Rare Bird Books)

Ramita Navai discusses and signs City of Lies: Love, Sex, Death, and the Search for Truth in Tehran
Sep 12 2014 - 7:00pm
Book Soup

Drawn from conversations whispered across tables in the cafes that line Vali Asr, Tehran's pulsing central thoroughfare, Ramita Navai gives voice to the unforgettable lives of ordinary people forced to live extraordinary lives in modern Tehran: the porn star, the ageing socialite, the assassin and enemy of the state who ends up working for the Republic, the religious militiaman who undergoes a sex change, the dutiful housewife who files for divorce, and the old-time thug running a gambling den.
Rich, absorbing and exotic, this is an insider's glimpse into the local personalities, the unremarkable busy bodies and hysterical intrigues buzzing about the city like you've never seen before. This is a place where Mullahs visit prostitutes, cosmetic surgeons restore girls' virginity and homemade porn is bought and sold in the bazaars. Here, survival depends on an intricate network of lies and falsehoods. Far removed from the picture of Tehran we glimpse in news stories, we are shown another city--a hidden city--but a far more honest one. (PublicAffairs)

Daisy Hernandez discusses and signs A Cup of Water Under My Bed: A Memoir
Sep 13 2014 - 4:00pm
Book Soup

In this lyrical, coming-of-age memoir, Daisy Hernandez chronicles what the women in her Cuban-Colombian family taught her about love, money, and race. Her mother warns her about "envidia "and men who seduce you with pastries, while one tia bemoans that her niece is turning out to be ""una india"" instead of an American. Another auntie instructs that when two people are close, they are bound to become like "una y mugre," fingernails and dirt, and that no, Daisy's father is not godless. He's simply praying to a candy dish that can be traced back to Africa.   These lessons--rooted in women's experiences of migration, colonization, "y carino"--define in evocative detail what it means to grow up female in an immigrant home. In one story, Daisy sets out to defy the dictates of race and class that preoccupy her mother and tias, but dating women and transmen, and coming to identify as bisexual, leads her to unexpected questions. In another piece, NAFTA shuts local factories in her hometown on the outskirts of New York City, and she begins translating unemployment forms for her parents, moving between English and Spanish, as well as private and collective fears. In prose that is both memoir and commentary, Daisy reflects on reporting for the New York Times as the paper is rocked by the biggest plagiarism scandal in its history and plunged into debates about the role of race in the newsroom.  A heartfelt exploration of family, identity, and language, A Cup of Water Under My Bed is ultimately a daughter's story of finding herself and her community, and of creating a new, queer life. Rock Of Ages, Gowalla Launch Sunset Strip Scavenger Hunt

You’ve rocked out to Journey and Pat Benatar in the comfort of your own home. And chances are you’ve dazzled karaoke audiences with your flair for Foreigner. Now’s your chance to bring that raw talent to the big stage as Rock Of Ages launches a three-week scavenger hunt on The Sunset Strip, with the grand prize winner receiving a walk-on role in the hit Broadway musical’s L.A. run.

Channeling The Spirit Of John Bonham: TheSunsetStrip.com Exclusive Interview With Drummer Samantha Maloney

The spirit of Led Zeppelin was alive and well on Jan. 13 as the Key Club hosted a special encore show paying homage to the band’s legendary drummer, John Bohnam. The night, produced by Brian Tichy and Club Vodka promoter Joe Sutton, featured a house band with a rotating cast of rock’s most prestigious drummers banging out their favorite Led Zep tunes.

In the company of notables such as Chris Slade (AC/DC), Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Ozzy Osbourne), Abe Laboriel (Paul McCartney, Sting) and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), drummer extraordinaire Samantha Maloney (Hole, Mötley Crüe, Chelsea Girls) was the sole female to take the stage, picking up the sticks for the classic “All My Love.” Her hard hitting, dynamic performance was one of the definitive high points of the evening, as Maloney proved more impressive than some of her better known contemporaries.

Francis And The Lights Kick Off The Strip's Best Nighttime Pool Party

The Skybar pool deck may seem like an unlikely music venue for most, but a crowd of well-mannered, indie music devotees were packed poolside on Jan. 14 to enjoy a great night of music with New York-based ’80s throwback band Francis And The Lights as part of Mondrian Sessions live music series.

Francis And The Lights, who recently toured with pals MGMT, jump-started the 2011 series appropriately with songs like "In a Limousine" and "Get in the Car." The crowd was into it – swaying along to every note. Mojitos, an unseasonably hot winter night and sweeping views of the city added to the swanky late night pool party scene.

The series continues Friday, Feb. 11 when L.A. natives Fool’s Gold perform, weaving together Western pop aesthetics with African rhymes and melodies. That performance is then followed by Ted Leo, Dum Dum Girls, Lykke Li and more!

Sunset Strip Picks: Jan. 24-30

Harvey) and the Darling Stilettos all rockin’ out for a good cause; Proceeds from the show will benefit breast cancer. When one of the founders of The Strip’s music legacy puts on a show, you know it’s going to be big!
