Benoit Denizet-Lewis discusses and signs Travels with Casey
Jul 30 2014 - 7:00pm
Book Soup

"I don't think my dog likes me very much," New York Times Magazine writer Benoit Denizet-Lewis confesses at the beginning of his journey with his nine-year-old Labrador-mix, Casey. Over the next four months, thirty-two states, and 13,000 miles in a rented motor home, Denizet-Lewis and his canine companion attempt to pay tribute to the most powerful interspecies bond there is, in the country with the highest rate of dog ownership in the world.  On the way, Denizet-Lewis--known for his deeply reported dispatches from far corners of American life--meets an irresistible cast of dogs and dog-obsessed humans. Denizet-Lewis and Casey hang out with wolf-dogs in Appalachia, search with a dedicated rescuer of stray dogs in Missouri, spend a full day at a kooky dog park in Manhattan, get pulled over by a K9 cop in Missouri, and visit "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Millan in California. And then there are the pet psychics, dog-wielding hitchhikers, and two nosy women who took their neighbor to court for allegedly failing to pick up her dog's poop. Travels With Casey is a delightfully idiosyncratic blend of memoir and travelogue coupled with an exploration of a dog-loving America. What does our relationship to our dogs tell us about ourselves and our values? Denizet-Lewis explores those questions--and his own canine-related curiosities and insecurities--during his unforgettable road trip through our dog-loving nation. (Simon & Schuster)

Recipes start with the basic formula for making bread— requiring little more than flour, water, time, and a pan—and build in depth and detail as the user progresses to more complex loaves, including Josey's cult favorite Dark Mountain Rye. With chapters dedicated to pizza, pocketbreads, and treats, Josey's playful, encouraging tone makes for a fun read full of great advice for bakers of all levels. (Chronicle Books)

Ann Hamilton discusses and signs Expecting
Aug 5 2014 - 7:00pm
Book Soup

Laurie and Alan are expecting, again. After two miscarriages, Laurie was afraid they'd never be able to have a child. Now she's cautiously optimistic -- the fertility treatment worked, and things seem to be different this time around. But she doesn't yet know how different.  Jack can't seem to catch a break -- his parents are on his case about graduating from college, he's somehow dating two girls at once, and he has to find a way to pay back the money he borrowed from his fraternity's party fund. The only jobs he is qualified for barely pay enough to keep him in beer money, but an ad for the local sperm bank gives Jack an idea.  Laurie and Alan's joy is shattered when their doctor reveals that Laurie was accidentally impregnated by sperm from a donor rather than her husband. Who is Donor 296. And how will their family change now that Donor 296 is inarguably part of it? (Sourcebooks Landmark)

Todd Glass discusses and signs The Todd Glass Situation: A Bunch of Lies about My Personal Life and a Bunch of True Stories about My 30-Year Career in Stand-Up Comedy
Aug 6 2014 - 7:00pm
Book Soup

A hilarious, poignant memoir from comedian Todd Glass about his decision at age forty-eight to finally live openly as a gay man--and the reactions and support from his comedy pals, from Louis CK to Sarah Silverman.   Growing up in a Philadelphia suburb in the 1970s was an easy life. Well, easy as long as you didn't have dyslexia or ADD, or were a Jew. And once you added gay into the mix, life became more difficult. So Todd Glass decided to hide the gay part, no matter how comic, tragic, or comically tragic the results.   It might have been a lot easier had he chosen a profession other than stand-up comedy. By age eighteen, Todd was opening for big musical acts like George Jones and Patti LaBelle. His career carried him through the Los Angeles comedy heyday in the 1980s, its decline in the 1990s, and its rebirth via the alternative comedy scene and the explosion in podcasting. But the harder he worked at his craft, the more difficult it became to manage his "situation." There were the years of abstinence and half-hearted attempts to "cure" himself. The fake girlfriends so that he could tell relationship jokes onstage. The staged sexual encounters to burnish his reputation offstage. It took a brush with death to cause him to rethink the way he was living his life; a rash of suicides among gay teens to convince him that it was finally time to come out to the world.   Now, Todd has written an open, honest, and hilarious memoir in an effort to help everyone--young and old, gay and straight--breathe a little more freely. Peppered with anecdotes from his life among comedy's greatest headliners and tales of the occasionally insane lengths Todd went through to keep a secret that--let's face it--he probably didn't have to keep for as long as he did, The Todd Glass Situation is a front-row seat to the last thirty plus years of comedy history and a deeply personal story about one man's search for acceptance. June, 1940.  For the United States, war is on the horizon.  For Miranda Corbie, private investigator and erstwhile escort, there are debts to be paid and memories--long-suppressed and willfully forgotten--to be resurrected. Enter the U.S. State Department and the man who helped Miranda get her PI license. A man she owes. A man who asks her to track a chemistry professor here in San Francisco whom he suspects is a spy for the Nazis. Playing along may get Miranda a ticket to Blitz-bombed England and answers about her past...if she survives.  Through sordid back alleys and art gallery halls, from drag dress nightclubs to a Nazi costume ball, Miranda's journey into fear takes her on the famed City of San Francisco streamliner and to Reno, Nevada, the Biggest Little City in the World...where she finds herself framed for a murder she never anticipated. Forced to go underground, Miranda soldiers on alone, determined to find the truth about a murder, a Nazi spy, and her own troubling past.   But Miranda will have to learn the difference between reality and illusion, from despair to deceit and factual to fake, as she tries to get her life back...and navigates a City of Ghosts.  Miranda Corbie's back. Noir will never be the same.  And Kelli Stanley will once again mesmerize readers with the most thrilling novel yet in her award-winning series. (Minotaur Books)

Having shared the stage with some of the biggest bands in the world, Matt Sorum (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver) has tasted success on a grand scale more than just once. His latest project as captain of rock and roll girl group the Darling Stilettos has him on the brink of mainstream stardom once again.

Cheech & Chong To Light Up The Strip Again

Cheech & Chong are returning to The Sunset Strip on Tuesday, Nov. 16 to sign a larger-than-life art guitar created to celebrate the internationally comedy duo. The painted guitar is one of 26 10-foot replicas placed along The Strip as part of the Gibson GuitarTown public art project. The signing will take place at 2 p.m. outside of The Roxy Theatre.

The guitar was designed by artist Margaret Garcia to celebrate the successful careers of the duo, both on stage and off, who got their start performing in West Hollywood’s The Troubadour as well as The Roxy Theatre (which was featured in “Up In Smoke”) and The Comedy Store. Each side of the guitar is dedicated to a portrait of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. The guitar also pays tribute to The Sunset Strip’s role in developing comedy as well as music.

Lady Sinatra Vs. Volcano Dolls: It's Ladies' Night In Hades

When you think of “ladies' night,” chances are that the Viper Room is not the first place that pops into your head, which is why you can rest assured that their version of the female-friendly promotional hook is sure to have a bit more attitude than your usual pink cosmo affair. Tonight’s “Ladies' Night In Hades” features two of The Sunset Strip’s favorite bands – Lady Sinatra and Volcano Dolls – as well as twists on the traditional drink specials and, of course, free entrance for bad girls.

Pleather, Suds, Soy Dogs: LA Vegan Beer Fest @ The Roxy

Last Saturday, Nov. 6, friends of animals and friends of delicious beer alike came together for L.A. Vegan Beer Fest at The Roxy Theatre. The unlimited pours of craft beers were flowing from breweries including Stone Brewing Company, Eagle Rock Brewery, Ballast Point, Bootleggers Brewery and Lagunitas, among others, while food vendors served up meatless, vegan versions of pub fare, including jalapeno poppers, hotdogs, nachos, burritos and chocolate cupcakes. The afternoon event also featured performances by The Paul Chesne Band, Owl Acid, Holland Greco Trio, Ease Up and The Makepeace Brothers, as well as a  private VIP tasting room located at On The Rox.

Brent X Mendoza was on hand to sample the fare and snap some photos of this amazing crowd.
