Tony Fletcher discusses and signs Boy About Town: A Memoir
Apr 21 2014 - 7:00pm
Book Soup

The author of highly acclaimed Keith Moon and Smiths biographies now tells his own story of a life in love with music, taking the reader back to the glory days of the 1970s. This is the story of his formative years in the pre- and post-punk music scenes of London, told via a Top 50 countdown: attendance at seminal gigs and encounters with musical heroes; schoolboy projects that became national success stories; the style culture of punks, mods, and skinheads and the tribal violence that enveloped them; life as a latchkey kid in a single-parent household; weekends on the football terraces in a quest for street credibility; and the teenage boy's unending obsession with losing his virginity. Featuring a vibrant cast of supporting characters from school friends to rock stars, and built up from notebooks, diaries, interviews, letters, and issues of his now legendary fanzine Jamming!, this is an evocative, bittersweet, amusing, and wholly original account of growing up and coming of age in the glory days of the 1970s. Holly George-Warren discusses and signs A Man Called Destruction: The Life and Music of Alex Chilton, from Box Tops to Big Star to Backdoor Man
Apr 22 2014 - 7:00pm
Book Soup

Alex Chilton's story is rags to riches in reverse, beginning with teenage rock stardom and heading downward. Following stints leading 60s sensation the Box Tops ("The Letter") and pioneering 70s popsters Big Star ("the ultimate American pop band"--"Time"), Chilton became a dishwasher. Yet he rose again in the 80s as a solo artist, producer, and trendsetter, coinventing the indie-rock genre. By the 90s, acolytes from R.E.M. to Jeff Buckley embodied Chilton's legacy, ushering him back to the spotlight before his untimely death in 2010.
In the career-spanning and revelatory A Man Called Destruction, longtime Chilton acquaintance Holly George-Warren has interviewed more than 100 bandmates, friends, and family members to flesh out a man who presided over--and influenced--four decades of American musical history, rendered here with new perspective through the adventures of a true iconoclast. Apr 23 2014 - 7:00pm
Book Soup

Mad World is a highly entertaining oral history that celebrates the New Wave music phenomenon of the 1980s via new interviews with 35 of the most notable artists of the period. Each chapter begins with a discussion of their most popular song but leads to stories of their history and place in the scene, ultimately painting a vivid picture of this colorful, idiosyncratic time. Mixtape suggestions, fashion sidebars, and quotes from famous contemporary admirers help fill out the fun. Participants include members of Duran Duran, New Order, The Smiths, Tears for Fears, Adam Ant, Echo and the Bunnymen, Devo, ABC, Spandau Ballet, A Flock of Seagulls, Thompson Twins, and INXS. Morley presents and signs If You’re Reading This, There's Still Time
Apr 24 2014 - 7:00pm
Book Soup

Morley is a Los Angeles-based street artist that specializes in bold, typographic posters which he wheat pastes within the urban landscape. Blending humor, hope and his unique perspective on life, Morley's aim is to act as a friendly voice amongst the cacophony of billboarded messages and corporate slogans. This voice was given a face when he began including an image of himself in each of his pieces, looking to create a more intimate relationship between the artist and the audience than many of his anonymous contemporaries could allow. In 2011, Morley's work caught the eye of Steve Lazarides whose Outsiders imprint began selling his work, describing it thusly: "His sympathetic statements give the tirelessly aspirational residents a welcome reminder of what's important in life: love, simple pleasures, making the world a slightly better place and not hating on yourself too much."
Today, he continues to paste his work in any city that doesn't enforce their vandalism laws through caning. Also he made us promise to include the fact that he can hold his breath for over an hour, and that "if anyone challenged him to a breath holding contest, they would totally lose," but he was probably lying about that. Elaine Lui presents and signs Listen to the Squawking Chicken: When Mother Knows Best, What's a Daughter to Do? a Memoir (Sort Of)
Apr 25 2014 - 7:00pm
Book Soup

As the 800,000+ U.S. fans of Elaine Lui's site know, her mother, aka The Squawking Chicken, is a huge factor in Elaine's life. She pulls no punches, especially with her only child. "Where's my money?" she asks every time she sees Elaine. "You'll never be Miss Hong Kong," she informed her daughter when she was a girl. Listen to the Squawking Chicken lays bare the playbook of unusual advice, warnings, and unwavering love that has guided Elaine throughout her life. Using the nine principles that her mother used to raise her, Elaine tells us the story of the Squawking Chicken's life--in which she walked an unusual path to parent with tough love, humor, and, through it all, a mother's unyielding devotion to her daughter. This is a love letter to mothers everywhere. (Amy Einhorn Books)

The Cat Club, JD Bender Partner For Weekly "Hollywood Hayride" Country Music Night

The Cat Club may be a lot rock and roll, but starting this Wednesday it also gets a little bit country with JD Bender’s Hollywood Hayride, a new weekly residency that promises to put some Hollywood tinsel in your two-step. Country crooner turned club promoter JD Bender was able to hang up his boots long enough to speak with TheSunsetStrip.com about opening night of his Hollywood Hootenanny.

Sunset Strip Picks: Oct. 4-10

Beginning Monday, Oct. 4 The Standard hotel presents a new night for us weekday warriors -- you know, those of us who party during the week and work on the weekends. Every Monday, Working Class brings together industry movers and shakers, musicians and scenesters for a night of networking, music and half-price drinks. Hosted by Heather Garfias, this week’s gathering will feature sets from Tetris and Al Squared spinning til 2 a.m. Doors open at 10 p.m. RSVP at missahhbrey@gmail.com. www.thestandardhotels.com/hollywood

Dine With Art

If you've ever dreamed of dining in an art museum, now is your chance to make that dream a reality. West Hollywood’s The Avenues: Art, Fashion and Design District is hosting a series of innovative dining events that lets you dine with art.

“Taste Art” will highlight the City’s premier art galleries and acclaimed restaurants, pairing art exhibits with special prix-fixe menus from West Hollywood’s hottest chefs. The dining events will take place Tuesday nights at restaurants throughout the city, including four Sunset Strip restaurants (Gordon Ramsay at The London West Hollywood, BLT Steak, RH at Andaz and Restaurant at Sunset Marquis).

Come One, Come All!

Fashion-forward retailer LIVE! On Sunset is celebrating its second birthday this Saturday with a carnival party, and you're invited!

The afternoon party will include festive carnival games and prizes, cocktails, food, music from DJ John Lock and a raffle for your chance to win a gift card and closet makeover.

LIVE! On Sunset made a splash two years ago when it opened on The Sunset Strip. The store provides a one-of-a-kind shopping experience blending traditional in-store shopping with an interactive, online component. The retailer also boasts a DJ booth with professional recording and sound equipment, a stage for live performances, music listening center and a casual lounge area to rest those feet after a long day of perusing the racks.

Sunset Strip Picks: Sept. 27 - Oct. 3

Start your week off right with the PICK OF THE WEEK. Monday, Sept. 27 The Roxy Theatre hosts singer/songwriter extraordinaire Pete Yorn.
