Tonight, The world famous Viper Room welcomes L.A.’s own hard rock heartthrobs The Dreaming. Comprised of former members of Stabbing Westward, Deadsy and the Murderdolls, the band has been relentlessly touring and releasing material since 2002 earning themselves a fanbase that stretches across the country and overseas.

With a new lineup and a new full length record on the horizon, frontman Christopher Hall is optimistic about the band’s bright future carrying on the dark wave torch.

What’s the status of the new record?  What can we expect?

The new record is mixed and mastered and scheduled to be released October 4 on Epochal Records/EMI.

It’s a cool, heavy rock record with lots of retro keyboard programming. I listened to a lot of early Ministry, Nitzer Ebb and Depeche Mode for the keyboard influences and tried to break away from the more modern metal “screamo” sound and find our own voice on this record.

…It was tricky constantly going though different guitar players trying to find the right fit for the band. Replacing Jinxx (Black Veil Brides) proved to be impossible, so I kind of had to redefine the band without him. You never know what you have until it’s gone.

How would you describe the band’s songwriting process?  With so many seasoned veterans in the lineup how do you prevent there from being “too many cooks in the kitchen?”

Actually there were too few cooks in the kitchen! It was literally like pulling teeth to get any of the guys to come out to Pasadena, where I live, to help write songs. We ended up doing a lot of email sessions where Carlton [Carlton Bost, Deadsy] would write guitar parts in Studio City and then send them to me.

I guess it saved on airfare and hotel costs though… Getting our then bass player to come out from the west wide was impossible, so I ended up tracking most of the bass on the record, with Carlton tracking the more technical parts and emailing them to me [laughter].

It seems the band has an affinity for covering ’80s dark wave/new wave covers. Choosing from the following options, which would be the most likely candidate for your next B-side: “Karma Chameleon” (Culture Club), “Relax” (Frankie Goes To Hollywood), or “99 Luftballons” (Nena)?

“99 Luftballoons” hands down! But “Relax” would also be cool… I would have to go with "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" for my Culture Club cover, although I think The Wedding Singer soundtrack may have already nailed that one.

Do you remember the last dream you had? Any recurring dreams?

My two greyhounds escaping, and me chasing them and not being able to catch them.  And yes, it’s recurring!

Dream Interpretation: Freudian or Jungian theory?

Interpretive dance..? Which is only an admission of not knowing the difference between the two and trying to play off my ignorance with cleverness.
