Sunset Strip Picks: Sept. 21-26

Tuesday, Sept. 21 the Viper Room presents ‘80s inspired power-pop phenoms The Dance Party. Celebrating the release of their new record, Touch, this L.A.-by-way-of-D.C. quintet is destined to be the next big thing. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. www.viperroom.com

 

PICK OF THE WEEK:  On Wednesday, Sept. 22 House of Blues Sunset Strip and The Roxy Theatre partner for #HOBROX – a free, all-ages live music showcase featuring some of the hottest up-and-coming bands from The Sunset Strip. The lineup includes Hypercrush, Wicker, The Cataracs featuring Dev and Donnis. The partnership is part of Social Media Week in Los Angeles and follows a panel discussion,"The Next Stage of Engage: Bringing Online Music Communities to Life", about the role of social media in the live music industry.  The panel begins at 6 p.m., with the live music party kicking off at 7:30 p.m. Both events are FREE, but RSVP is required

 

Book Soup hosts author Will Fellows on Thursday, Sept. 23 as he presents and signs copies of his new book, Gay Bar: The Fabulous, True Story Of A Daring Woman And Her Boys In The 1950s. Fellows sheds new light on the story of Helen Branson, a divorced grandmother who owned and operated a gay bar in Los Angeles in the 1950s, a time when California statutes prohibited homosexuals from gathering in bars. The signing begins at 7 p.m.

The Roxy Theatre presents notorious party crew Dirt Nasty, Andre Legacy and Beardo on Friday, Sept. 24. The boys return to their favorite venue to cause musical mischief and mayhem. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 advance/$15 day of show. www.theroxyonsunset.com

 

This Saturday, Sept. 25 marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Considered to be the most influential drummer in rock n’ roll history, the legend lives on as the Key Club hosts Bonzo: The Groove Remains The Same, a night in honor of John Bonham. This special night will feature performances by today’s most accomplished drummers including Jason Bonham (son of John Bonham), Steven Adler (GNR), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and many more as they cover their favorite Zeppelin classics. Sunday, Sept. 26 the Viper Room presents L.A.’s own down-tempo psychedelic spinsters Mini Mansions. Shoegaze at its finest, this band founded by Queens Of The Stone Age bassist Michael Shuman is an underground staple for all hipsters in the know. Also on the bill, My Pet Saddle, Sleepy Sun and Strangers Family Band. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance/$12 at the door. www.viperroom.com
