Last week, former frontman of L.A.’s beloved garage-glam band The Ringers, Joe Hursley, returned to the world famous Viper Room for a CD release party with his brand new incarnation, Indians.

Actor, musician, fashionista, Hursley has been a fixture on The Strip with his no holds barred sense of style, wild/unpredictable stage antic, and warm, bigger-than-life personality. So needless to say fans and Sunset Strippers alike have been eager for the debut of this much buzzed about new project.

Before their upcoming showcase at this year’s Sunset Strip Music Festival, we caught up with the man, the myth, the tiger samurai warrior, to discuss his new band, playing his first leading role in a major feature, and his penchant for g-strings.

So this new project, Indians, how does it differ from The Ringers? What can we expect on your first CD release?

It’s the same church…different pew. The Ringers were a very special project, because it was the first musical machine I cranked up. The energy behind the shows came from the raw spirit of the music…and keeping it fun!

In making music, I strive to strip it down to the bone. There is a comfort in simplicity as a seed, planting this seed in the field where other ninja talent farmers make it grow is an experience that tops off my hearts gas tank and keeps me soaring high.

Indians share the same savage chainsaw energy as The Ringers. I felt right at home with cousin Patrick back there on drums — we have a super special connection and it is an honor to play with such a radical bam bammer. Michael Hays (guitar) and Mike McGill (bass) have brought so much to the table; their musicianship is humbling. It feels  amazing creating with guys who inspire you to climb further up the mountain. I am so fortunate to have followed the warpath of soul gold nuggets that brought this tribe together. Sweaty fun, Brent… sweaty fun.

You’ve been in quite a number of commercials/films. Where will we be seeing you next?

Actually I got my first lead in a feature that I wrapped last year called Balls to the Wall. It’s directed by legendary Penelope Spheeris (Wayne’s World, Black Sheep, all the “Decline of Western Civilization” docs) and has a gang of talented people in it.

I play a thirty year old comic book artist stuck in a dead-end job who is forced into financing his wedding by becoming a male stripper. It was a seriously amazing experience to be a part of. I felt I had been training my whole life for this role.

Running around in a g-string for six weeks was a dream come true, and my thong collection has soared to new heights. I actually tore my shoulder while filming and ended up having to have surgery and five months of rehab, thus embracing the “Balls to the Wall” spirit!

It’s making the rounds at festivals, but I hope the world gets a chance to see it on the big screen. A movie about stripping for love could do wonders for some relationships.

Speaking of g-strings, you’re known as a bit of a “fashionista.”  Any summer fashion tips? Dos and don’ts? Fashion faux pas?

Well, I went to a strict Catholic school where uniforms ruled. When I got to high school it was a shock to see how much style was out there.

When school was out, I would change into my Speedo, and ditch the shirt, and run around Texas with a Tarzan heart…  It is something I will never grow out of and hope my future offspring rummage through my life’s collection of random threads like a treasure chest. “Summer do’s” – take it all off!

You have a strange fondness for tigers.  Did Charlie Sheen steal your tiger thunder?

I feel like we all have a spirit animal. I like to think I’m a tiger…but I’d be happy as a jackalope if I got to ride in a little saddle on top of a tiger.

Tiger thunder crashes…but tiger lightning rolls!

Everyone has a great story about a night on The Sunset Strip. Anything you’re legally allowed to share?

I got tackled stealing a stanchion from a Hollywood club that was snubbing the line of people waiting to get in. I thought breaking the velvet rope wall was something they all wanted, too… I had to kick my own ass and bring blood for the bouncers to stop them from dragging me back to the entrance where the cops were to be called. No one wants any blood on their hands!

I was hoping to turn the stanchion into a mic stand, but security didn’t seem to share my creative vision.
