The Sunset Strip has a busy week of construction and planning to welcome 25,000 runners to the boulevard during the L.A. Marathon on Sunday, March 21! Remember, all businesses are open during normal hours during construction.

Lanes will be reduced to one travel lane in the eastbound and one travel lane in the westbound direction during normal work hours of Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. At the end of the day lanes will be reopened to two lanes of traffic in each direction.

FINAL PAVING PHASE I (ALTA LOMA TO HARPER):
The paving of the base course, or bottom layer of paving, will be complete on Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday, March 17 and 18, the final cap will be paved using the rubberized asphalt. Rubberized asphalt is made up of recycled car tires that would otherwise go to landfills. During the rubberized asphalt paving there will be lane closures down to one lane in each direction. While the hot asphalt is cooling traffic will not be able to drive on the new pavement for about 30-40 minutes, and the contractor will be switching lanes and moving traffic accordingly all day long.

For this rubberized paving the contractor will start in the eastbound lanes at 7 a.m. on both days so that the paving can be complete by 4 p.m. each day. Westbound lanes will start after 9 a.m. on both days. The contractor has been granted a special extended-hours permit to start the paving at 7 a.m. due to eastbound traffic on Sunset being lighter in the morning.

LA CIENEGA BLVD & SWEETZER AVE:
On Wednesday, March 17 and Thursday, March 18, access on both La Cienega and Sweetzer between Fountain and Sunset will be restricted to only residents who live in the area only.

Due to the final paving traffic will not be able to go north to Sunset Boulevard from La Cienega and from Sweetzer. De Longpre Avenue will be still be open. If you live in that area, please tell the flag person that you live in this area so that you can get to your driveway. On these days please allow for extra time to drive into or out of your homes. The traffic control starts at 7 a.m. on both days, and will be reopened once the pavement will allow for traffic. The roads will be reopened by 4 p.m. each day.

Please note the roadway resumes to two lanes of traffic in each direction at the end of each day (after 4 p.m.)

OLIVE DRIVE PAVING:
This week the contractor will pave the portion of Olive Drive north of the potted plants/stop signs. They will start this work at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16. This work is being coordinated with the businesses in the area. While the pavement is cooling, no traffic will be allowed to drive on it.

TRAFFIC STRIPING:
The contractor installing the traffic striping on the roadway will work Thursday night. This is relatively quiet work and will occur in the middle of the night when traffic is light. There will be only a moving lane closure, meaning a truck with the arrow board will follow behind the crew.

LOS ANGELES MARATHON:
Just a reminder that this Sunday, March 21 is the Los Angeles Marathon. The Sunset Strip Beautification Project will have the first phase of project fully paved for Sunday’s event. Mile markers 13-14, including the all important halfway point at 13.1 miles, occurs on The Sunset Strip.

The runners will enter the City of West Hollywood at Sunset Boulevard and Havenhurst Drive, then head west along Sunset, turn left down San Vicente Boulevard to Santa Monica Boulevard, and then down Doheny Drive out of our City. The Los Angeles Marathon reports that they have reached their cap of 25,000 registered runners for the marathon.

Sunset will be closed from 4 a.m., and will reopen to traffic at approximately noon. Parking will not be allowed on the race course. Spectators are encouraged to find public parking lots in the area according to their posted rates, and walk to the route to cheer the runners on.

Also there will be an official marathon block party scheduled from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Sunset and Sweetzer (next to Cabo Cantina). The block party will feature live music, radio remotes, product sampling and giveaways. Admission is free and open to the public. Another DJ booth will be located at Sunset and La Cienega to help motivate the runners.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during the construction and temporary lane closures.
