The Sunset Strip Beautification Project is operating at full speed as it nears completion of phase I. We ask that you please pardon our dust this week as crews begin grinding and repaving the boulevard between Alta Loma and Harper Avenue. And remember, all businesses are open, so please don’t forget to stop and say hello.

SPECIAL ALERT: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10
Due to circumstance beyond the City’s control, it will be necessary for crews to do some early morning work tomorrow. The work includes grinding the pavement between Alta Loma Road and Harper Avenue between the hours of 1 – 7 a.m.

Regular work hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please note there is no work on weekends.

During work hours lanes will be reduced to one travel lane in the eastbound and one travel lane in the westbound direction. At the end of the day lanes will be reopened to two lanes of traffic in each direction.

The grinding of the pavement should be completed this week and preparations for the final cap of the roadway surface are currently being done. These preparations include fixing areas of damaged roadway, sealing the cracks and sealing the joints of the concrete for the new roadway surface. The paving of the base course or bottom layer of paving will be complete this week.

Next week on March 15, 16 and 17, the final cap will be paved using the rubberized asphalt. Rubberized asphalt is made up of recycled car tires that would otherwise go to landfills. During the placement of rubberized asphalt, traffic must not drive on it until it has cooled and dried. Traffic will still be open to one lane in each direction while the paving is being done. Lanes will be reopened to normal traffic at 4 p.m. each day.

One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction during the grinding and paving operation. The roadway resumes to two lanes of traffic in each direction at the end of the day.

The contractor is finishing all concrete work on the sidewalks and driveways this week.

LOS ANGELES MARATHON
Just a reminder that just around the corner is the Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday, March 21, 2010. Mile markers 13-14, including the all important halfway point at 13.1 miles, occurs on Sunset Blvd. The runners will enter the City of West Hollywood at Sunset Boulevard and Havenhurst Drive, then head west along Sunset, turn left down San Vicente Blvd to Santa Monica Boulevard. The Los Angeles Marathon reports that more than 24,500 runners have already registered for the marathon and expect to reach their cap of 25,000 runners.

Sunset Boulevard will be closed from 4 a.m. on March 21, and will reopen to traffic around noon. Parking will not be allowed on the race course. Spectators are encouraged to find public parking lots in the area according to their posted rates, and walk to the route to cheer for runners.

Also there will be an official marathon block party scheduled from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Sunset and Sweetzer that will feature live music, radio remotes, product sampling and giveaways. Admission is free and open to the public. Another DJ booth will be located at Sunset and La Cienega.
